For weeks Katherine had been asking us to draw smiley faces – on paper, on the blackboard, on the steam in the bathroom mirror. She couldn’t get enough of them. So we started talking through the process. Every single time. Soon she could tell us how to draw them and would tell us off if she thought we hadn’t done it in the right order or had missed something off. Then one day, 22 June 2008 to be precise, she picked up the chalk and talked herself through drawing her first smiley face.
Oh boy, was she proud. So were we. And relieved that, at last, we wouldn’t have to draw smiley faces ALL THE TIME.
No, now we had to draw dogs and cats and bugs and birds.
A year later and Katherine draws all the time. Sometimes the pictures are very recognisable. Usually it’s Mummy or Daddy or Blacky – occasionally a family “portrait”. She can spend ages with her textas and paper simply creating. It's her "quiet time".
